What you need to know about taking vitamin C
What is vitamin C (ascorbic acid)?
Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin (also known as ascorbic acid) and is essential for the human body. It supports the immune system, promotes the formation of collagen and contributes to wound healing and the absorption of iron. Vitamin C also acts as an antioxidant and helps to protect cells from oxidative stress. It is mainly found in fruit and vegetables such as citrus fruits, peppers, broccoli, berries and cabbage. Pure ascorbic acid has a pleasantly sour taste and is particularly soluble in water, making it easy to stir into drinks. It is often used in food supplements to specifically cover the daily requirement, especially in cases of increased need or limited dietary intake.
What is pharmaceutical quality (EP and USP)?
Pharmaceutical quality (EP or USP) means that a substance meets certain purity and quality standards laid down in official pharmacopoeias - EP stands for the European Pharmacopoeia and USP for the United States Pharmacopoeia. Among other things, these standards set limits for impurities, heavy metals and other undesirable substances. Raw materials in EP or USP quality are therefore particularly pure and safe for use in food supplements and medicines. They guarantee consistently high quality, which is regularly checked.
Vitamin C*
- contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress
- contributes to the normal function of the immune system
- contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism
- contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue
- contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system
- contributes to normal psychological function
- increases iron absorption
- contributes to the regeneration of the reduced form of vitamin E
- contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of blood vessels, bones, cartilage, gums, skin and teeth
How does vitamin C (ascorbic acid) taste?
In powder form and dissolved in water, vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is absorbed very quickly by the body. Pure ascorbic acid tastes distinctly sour to lemony, as it is an organic acid. In some products, additional flavors or sweeteners are added to make the taste milder, but this is not absolutely necessary. Depending on the purity and formulation, vitamin C can also have a rather neutral to slightly bitter taste, especially in buffered variants. Products with a high purity are usually better tolerated and are particularly suitable for sensitive people.
What is the best way to take vitamin C (ascorbic acid) powder?
The easiest way to take vitamin C powder is to stir it into a glass of water and drink it straight away. As vitamin C is water-soluble, it is quickly absorbed by the body and unfolds its effect rapidly. If you have a sensitive stomach, it is advisable to divide the daily dose into two to three portions to improve tolerance. The body cannot store excess vitamin C, so it makes sense to distribute it evenly throughout the day.
How important is a good supply of vitamin C?
A good supply of vitamin C is particularly important as it plays a central role in the immune system, collagen formation and antioxidant defense. The need for vitamin C increases particularly during times of stress, increased physical exertion or during a cold. Pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers also have a higher requirement, as vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system and wound healing. Vitamin C intake is also important in old age, as the body's ability to absorb it can decrease over time. Nevertheless, food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
Is it possible to overdose on vitamin C (ascorbic acid)?
Just as it is possible to suffer from a vitamin C deficiency, it is also possible to overdose on vitamin C. Excessive consumption can lead to gastrointestinal complaints such as diarrhea, nausea or abdominal cramps. Very high doses of vitamin C can put a strain on the body and cause unpleasant symptoms. People with kidney problems in particular should be careful, as a high dose of vitamin C can put additional strain on the kidneys. If in doubt, it is advisable to seek medical advice to clarify the correct dosage and application.
