Everything you need to know about taking Vitamin C
What is Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) and how do we absorb it?
Vitamin C (also known as L-Ascorbic Acid) is a water-soluble vitamin. The "L" denotes the natural form of Vitamin C that the body can utilise. It is essential for humans and cannot be produced by the body itself, which is why it must be obtained from external sources. This is typically achieved through fruit (e.g. citrus fruits or berries) as well as vegetables such as peppers, broccoli or various types of cabbage. In food supplements, it is often used to specifically meet daily requirements, particularly when there is an increased need or limited intake through diet.
Vitamin C is generally absorbed through raw fruit and raw vegetables. Cooking largely destroys Vitamin C, and the cooking water also "washes" the Vitamin C out of the vegetables. Since Vitamin C is not stored by the body, regular and adequate intake is essential.
It is also interesting to know that the body does not distinguish between ascorbic acid taken as a food supplement and that obtained from fruit. The effect in the body is therefore the same.
During periods of increased demand, or when fresh produce is temporarily unavailable, supplementation with Vitamin C is recommended. Since it is very economical and has a long shelf life, keeping a supply at home as a precaution also makes good sense.
What does Ph. Eur. quality mean?
Our telomit® Vitamin C Powder is available as a food supplement in pharmaceutical quality (Ph. Eur.). "Ph. Eur." stands for Pharmacopoea Europaea — the European Pharmacopoeia and reference work for the quality control of medicines in Europe. For a raw material, this means the highest purity, guaranteed active ingredient content and tested safety, as every batch must be tested in a laboratory. We use this verified quality for our telomit® Vitamin C Powder because the best quality in our products is our top priority.
An adequate intake of Vitamin C is most commonly associated with a strong immune system. In fact, ascorbic acid also supports a wide range of bodily functions, which is why it is so important for our bodies. It is less well known, for example, that Vitamin C also plays a role in collagen formation. But Vitamin C can do even more:
Vitamin C contributes to*
- the normal function of the immune system
- the normal function of the immune system during and after intense physical exercise
- normal energy metabolism
- the reduction of tiredness and fatigue
- the normal function of the nervous system
- normal psychological function
- normal collagen formation for the normal function of bones
- normal collagen formation for normal cartilage function
- normal collagen formation for the normal function of blood vessels
- normal collagen formation for the normal function of teeth
- normal collagen formation for the normal function of gums
- normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin
- the protection of cells from oxidative stress
- the regeneration of the reduced form of Vitamin E
- an increase in iron absorption
What does Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) taste like?
When dissolved in water as a powder, Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) is absorbed very quickly by the body. Pure ascorbic acid has a distinctly sour to citrusy taste, as it is an organic acid. Some products add flavourings or sweeteners to make the taste milder — which is not necessary. Products with high purity are generally better tolerated and particularly suitable for sensitive individuals.
What is the best way to take Vitamin C powder?
The easiest way to take Vitamin C powder is to stir it into a glass of water and drink it immediately. Since Vitamin C is water-soluble, it is quickly absorbed by the body and takes effect rapidly.
How important is a good Vitamin C supply?
A good supply of Vitamin C is particularly important because it plays a central role in the body and cannot be produced by the body itself.
