Information on Vitamin C Intake
What is Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)?
Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin (also known as ascorbic acid) essential for the human body. It supports the immune system, promotes collagen formation, and contributes to wound healing and iron absorption. Vitamin C also acts as an antioxidant and helps protect cells from oxidative stress. It is found mainly in fruits and vegetables, especially citrus fruits, as well as peppers, broccoli, berries, and cabbage varieties. Pure ascorbic acid has a pleasantly acidic-lemon taste and is very soluble in water, making it easy to mix into drinks. In dietary supplements, it is often used to specifically cover daily needs, particularly in cases of increased requirements or limited intake from the diet.
What does Ph. Eur. quality mean?
“Ph. Eur. quality” means that the raw material used meets the quality requirements of a monograph of the European Pharmacopoeia (Pharmacopoeia Europaea, Ph. Eur.). These requirements set binding standards for how identity, purity, content, and other properties of a substance are tested and guaranteed. This ensures consistently high quality of the raw material.
Adequate Vitamin C intake is generally associated with a strong immune system. In fact, ascorbic acid also supports many other bodily functions, making it important for overall health. For example, it is less well known that Vitamin C is important for collagen formation.
Vitamin C is usually obtained from raw fruits and vegetables. Cooking destroys most of the Vitamin C, and cooking water also leaches the vitamin out of the vegetables. The body does not store Vitamin C, so regular intake is necessary.
The body makes no distinction in effectiveness or bioavailability whether Vitamin C comes from raw food or a dietary supplement. Therefore, supplementation is recommended during periods of increased need.

What does Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) taste like?
In powdered form and dissolved in water, Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is quickly absorbed by the body. Pure ascorbic acid tastes distinctly acidic to lemony, as it is an organic acid. Some products add flavors or sweeteners to soften the taste, which is not strictly necessary. Depending on purity and formulation, Vitamin C can also taste more neutral to slightly bitter, especially in buffered variants. High-purity products are usually better tolerated and especially suitable for sensitive individuals.
How is Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) powder best taken?
The easiest way to take Vitamin C powder is to stir it into a glass of water and drink it immediately. As Vitamin C is water-soluble, it is quickly absorbed and acts fast.
How important is a good Vitamin C supply?
A good Vitamin C supply is particularly important because it plays a central role in the immune system, collagen formation, and antioxidant defense. Especially during stressful times, increased physical activity, or colds, Vitamin C requirements increase. Pregnant and breastfeeding women also have higher needs, as Vitamin C contributes to normal immune function and wound healing. Adequate Vitamin C intake is also important in older age, as the body’s absorption ability can decline over time.
