What you need to know about taking calcium citrate
What is calcium?
Calcium is a chemical element (symbol: Ca) and an essential mineral that plays a vital role in the development and maintenance of bones and teeth. It also supports muscle and nerve function as well as blood clotting. The body absorbs calcium through food—good sources include dairy products, green vegetables, and calcium-enriched mineral water. Calcium requirements are increased during periods of growth, old age, or pregnancy. Vitamin D also plays a crucial role, as it promotes calcium absorption in the intestines.
What is calcium citrate or tricalcium dicitrate?
Calcium citrate is a calcium salt of citric acid. It is considered one of the highest-quality calcium compounds and is often preferred due to its good solubility and easy absorption by the body. Because of its high bioavailability, it is particularly suitable for individuals with sensitive stomachs or increased calcium requirements, such as during aging, growth, or pregnancy. Calcium citrate comes in different forms. The tricalcium dicitrate variant contains three calcium ions per two citrate molecules, providing a stable and well-soluble calcium source. This form is especially suitable for dietary supplements, effervescent tablets, or powders and is also used in the food industry as a firming agent or acidity regulator.
Calcium*
- contributes to normal blood clotting
- contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism
- contributes to normal muscle function
- is needed for the maintenance of normal bones
- and also for the maintenance of normal teeth
- contributes to normal neurotransmission
- also contributes to the normal function of digestive enzymes
- furthermore, it plays a role in the process of cell division and specialization
What does calcium citrate taste like?
Calcium citrate with a calcium content of 24% tastes rather neutral – especially when dissolved in water. This makes it pleasant to take. The lower the calcium content, the more pronounced the citric acid flavor – the powder then tastes noticeably more sour and "citrusy". The tricalcium dicitrate used here has a particularly high calcium content, which also makes the product more efficient.
What is the best way to take calcium citrate powder?
The best way to take calcium citrate powder is to dissolve it in a glass of water, stir well, and drink immediately. It can also be easily stirred into other liquids, such as fresh orange juice or smoothies. The vitamin C content in orange juice can further support calcium absorption, as vitamin C generally improves the absorption of minerals.
For optimal utilization, it is recommended to divide the daily dose into two servings. The body can only absorb limited amounts of calcium at one time – approximately a maximum of 500 mg per dose.
How important is a good calcium supply?
An adequate calcium supply is essential for building and maintaining strong bones and teeth. Calcium requirements are especially increased during periods of growth, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and in older age. Physically active individuals also lose more calcium due to increased strain and should therefore ensure sufficient intake.
However, food supplements do not replace a balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle but serve only as targeted support.
Can calcium be overdosed?
Yes – even calcium citrate can be overdosed. Symptoms of so-called hypercalcemia can include nausea or gastrointestinal discomfort. In severe cases, kidney problems or cardiac arrhythmias may occur. Therefore, the recommended intake should not be exceeded.
Some calcium products available on the market are overdosed. Our dosage recommendations are deliberately based on official guidelines.
Higher amounts than recommended should only be taken after consulting a doctor to avoid the risk of overdose.
Can calcium citrate interact with other substances?
Yes, calcium can affect the absorption and efficacy of certain medications as well as of iron, zinc, or magnesium – and vice versa.
If medications or supplements containing iron, zinc, or magnesium are taken at the same time, an interval of about four hours between intakes should be observed.
