Interesting facts about Ascophyllum nodosum and iodine
Interesting facts about Ascophyllum nodosum and iodine
The brown alga "Ascophyllum nodosum" used here comes from sustainably managed North Atlantic algae areas.
It is dried and gently broken into particles. The product is therefore also suitable for raw foods.
Natural iodine supply with Bio-Ascophyllum nodosum Sea brown algae naturally contain iodine.
We are therefore obliged to indicate the iodine content of the algae. Please note the information on the label in this respect. Not everyone likes the characteristic taste of algae, which is why the gently dried and crushed algae should be taken in capsule form. In addition, the encapsulation makes it easier to dose the iodine. Iodine* is a vital element:
- contribution to normal cognitive and neurological function (ID 273)
- to normal energy-yielding metabolism (ID 402)
- to normal thyroid function (ID 1237)
- to produce thyroid hormones (ID 1237)
*according to ESFA Article 13(1) of Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006
Since brown algae can be polluted by the pollution of the seas, we only use certified organic brown algae (Ascophyllum nodosum) for the production of our algae capsules. The capsule shell is also of vegan origin.
About Ascophyllum nodosum
The knotted kelp is a seaweed or brown algae, which is widespread mainly in the North Atlantic to the Arctic zones, but also in the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and subtropical areas. It is used for the extraction of alginic acid (algin), which is used in many ways. In the algae itself, algin is the structure-giving element of the cell walls. In the food industry, the extraction of algin from kelp is a by-product of the extraction of iodine from seaweed. The salts of alginic acid are called alginates. They are used in foodstuffs, e.g. as thickening and gelling agents. Alginates are also extracted for use in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries.
