What you need to know about taking Magnesium citrate
What is Magnesium?
Magnesium is a chemical element (with the symbol Mg) and is essential for the human body. Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic processes. It has antioxidant properties and can help reduce oxidative stress, which can occur during cell division. Magnesium is found in foods such as nuts, seeds, green leafy vegetables, and whole grains.
What is Magnesium Citrate or Trimagnesium Dicitrate?
Magnesium Citrate is a magnesium salt of citric acid (citrate). It is considered one of the best magnesium compounds and is often preferred because it is highly soluble and easily absorbed by the body. Due to its fast absorption and good solubility, it effectively contributes to regulating the electrolyte balance, especially for athletes or people who sweat a lot or lose fluids. Magnesium Citrate comes in various forms. The Trimagnesium Dicitrate variant provides more magnesium per gram of the substance than regular magnesium citrate, making it more efficient. The combination of three magnesium ions and two citrate molecules ensures good solubility, making it more tolerable for sensitive stomachs.
What does Pharmaceutical Quality (USP) mean?
telomit® Magnesium Citrate is available in pharmaceutical quality (USP). USP is one of the highest quality standards for medications, dietary supplements, and other pharmaceutical products. Products marked as USP quality meet the strict requirements and testing methods of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), an independent, non-governmental organization that sets the quality standards for medicines and other substances worldwide. Products with USP quality offer high safety, purity, and reliability.
Magnesium not only plays a role in cell division. It also contributes to*
- electrolyte balance
- reducing fatigue
- normal energy metabolism
- normal functioning of the nervous system
- normal psychological function
- maintenance of normal bones
- maintenance of normal teeth
- normal muscle function
- normal protein synthesis
What Does Magnesium Citrate Taste Like?
In powder form and dissolved in water, magnesium is absorbed by the body the fastest. However, the taste of magnesium citrate products can vary. The lower the magnesium content (many products contain only about 8%), the more sour (lemony) the magnesium citrate tastes. Sometimes, flavor enhancers are added to the product, but this is not necessary. The higher the magnesium content in magnesium citrate and the purer (less contaminated) it is, the more "neutral, powdery" the taste. With a higher magnesium content, the product is naturally more economical.
How Should Magnesium Powder Be Taken?
The easiest way is to dissolve the magnesium citrate in water, stir well, and drink it immediately. It also works very well, for example, when stirred into freshly squeezed orange juice or smoothies. The vitamin C in orange juice can even enhance the absorption of magnesium in the body, as it plays a role in improving mineral absorption. It is also recommended to spread the daily intake over two or three portions (see our recommended dosage), as the body can make better use of and optimize the available magnesium, since the intestine can only absorb a limited amount of magnesium at once.
How Important Is Adequate Magnesium Supply?
Physically active or athletic people need magnesium, but pregnant and breastfeeding women also have an increased need, as do older adults, because magnesium absorption in the body is less efficient with age. However, dietary supplements should not be used as a substitute for a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
Can Magnesium Citrate Be Overdosed?
Just as a magnesium deficiency can occur, it is also possible to overdose on magnesium. In the case of excessive magnesium consumption, diarrhea and gastrointestinal discomfort may occur. In cases of severe overdose, it can lead to a drop in blood pressure with corresponding symptoms. People with kidney problems are particularly at risk, as the kidneys may not be able to excrete the excess magnesium sufficiently and quickly enough. If in doubt, please consult a doctor.
There are many magnesium products on the market that are overdosed, which is why we always refer to official recommendations for our dosage guidelines for daily intake. The EU-wide reference intake for magnesium, according to the Food Information Regulation, called NRV (Nutrient Reference Value), is 375 mg per day. This value includes both the intake from daily food as well as from supplements. The reference values for women aged 25 and older are 300 mg per day, and for men, it is 350 mg per day, according to both EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) and DGE (German Nutrition Society).
